Free Beach Yoga Finale

A group of people practice Free Beach Yoga on mats spread across a sandy beach, with large dunes and a cloudy sky in the background.

This past weekend, Strandhill was one of the Free Yoga Beach Yoga Sessions around Sligo organised by Sligo County Council and was the perfect way to close out the season. The series was part of their ongoing commitment to outdoor wellbeing initiatives, promoted through their website and the personal networks of the event providers. As a free event, it welcomed participants from all walks of life, coming together for a soulful evening of relaxation and community.

The weather couldn’t have been better – calm, sunny skies and warm ocean breezes created an idyllic atmosphere for the yoga session. Strandhill, a hub of activity during the day, enjoyed a serene close to the weekend as locals and visitors alike gathered for this much-anticipated event. The session was held in the sheltered area of Shelly Valley, a location that provides the perfect blend of seclusion and open space. The natural environment makes it feel like an outdoor studio, creating a special kind of sanctuary where participants can unwind without the distraction of too many passers-by.

A diverse group joined in, with ages ranging from early 20s to late 60s. One notable participant was a man traveling around Ireland by bike, who was thrilled to stumble upon the free session. It was clear from the smiles and comments afterward that the event touched a wide range of people. Many attendees remarked on the joy of having a healthy, social event that didn’t revolve around alcohol, emphasizing the importance of accessible wellness activities.

The benefits of practicing beach yoga in Strandhill are enhanced by the unique environment. The ionized air from the nearby ocean helps boost the absorption of oxygen, making each breath feel richer and more energizing. This connection to nature only deepened the effects of the practice, amplifying the relaxation and stress-relief participants experienced.

The Strandhill session was led by Blaithin, who thoughtfully guided everyone through poses and breathing exercises focused on using time outdoors to fully destress, release anxiety, and feel recharged. Her calming presence helped participants tune into the natural beauty surrounding them, reminding everyone how rejuvenating it can be to practice mindfulness in nature.

This free beach yoga session was also dog-friendly, adding an extra layer of joy to the event. A few socially comfortable doggies were delighted to have their owners out and down at their level, basking in the peaceful atmosphere and making the experience even more heartwarming for all involved.

The feedback after the event was overwhelmingly positive. Participants loved the experience, with one person commenting, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was something free outdoors every week that specifically focuses on de-stressing?” Others echoed the desire for more regular, accessible wellbeing events, especially those that promote mental health and provide an alternative to traditional social activities.

The evening wrapped up in harmony, with participants feeling relaxed and renewed, reflecting on how wonderful it was to end the summer in such a peaceful, connected way. Events like this showcase the incredible impact that outdoor wellness initiatives can have on a community, and many hope that Sligo County Council will continue to offer these opportunities.

As we look forward to next summer, the hope is to see even more outdoor events that allow people to reconnect with nature, reduce stress, and prioritize their mental wellbeing. The Beach Yoga Finale was a reminder of how vital these gatherings are, and we can’t wait for what next season holds.
